Why Your Fibre Supplement Is Making Your Bloating Worse

You decided to do something good for your gut. You bought a fibre supplement, started taking it consistently, and ended up more bloated than before. So you stopped.

This is one of the most common patterns I see – and it has almost nothing to do with whether fibre works. Fibre works. The problem is usually which fibre, and what happens to it inside your gut.

Why fibre causes bloating in the first place

All dietary fibre reaches the large intestine largely undigested. Once there, your gut bacteria ferment it – breaking it down and producing short-chain fatty acids, which are essential for gut health, along with gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen.

That gas production is a normal and healthy part of how fibre works. The problem is when it happens too fast, in the wrong place, or with a fibre your gut isn't well adapted to process.

The result is bloating, distension, cramping, and the kind of discomfort that makes you decide fibre supplements aren't for you.

The psyllium problem

Psyllium husk is the most widely sold fibre supplement in Australia and globally. Its evidence base is solid – it supports bowel regularity, reduces LDL cholesterol, and has good long-term safety data.

But psyllium is a high-viscosity fibre. When it comes into contact with water, it rapidly absorbs liquid and swells into a thick, dense gel. This gel-forming property is part of how it works – but it's also the source of most of the tolerability problems people experience.

Rapid fermentation

Psyllium ferments relatively quickly in the gut. For people with an imbalanced gut microbiome – which is extremely common, particularly in women – this rapid fermentation produces a significant amount of gas in a short period of time. The result is acute bloating, often within an hour or two of taking it.

The gel effect on gut pressure

The thick gel that psyllium forms can slow gut transit in some people rather than speeding it up – particularly when fluid intake is inadequate. Slower transit means more fermentation time, which means more gas, which means more bloating.

The adjustment period

Supplement manufacturers often say bloating from psyllium is temporary and resolves after a few weeks of consistent use. For some people this is true. For others – particularly those with IBS, gut dysbiosis, or perimenopausal gut changes – the bloating persists or is severe enough that they stop taking it long before any adjustment occurs.

Why the type of fibre matters more than most people realise

Not all soluble fibres behave the same way. The key variable is viscosity – how thick and gel-forming the fibre is when it encounters water.

High-viscosity fibres like psyllium produce the bloating issues described above. Low-viscosity soluble fibres behave very differently. They dissolve completely in water with no gel formation, ferment more slowly and selectively, and produce significantly less gas – making them far better tolerated, particularly for people who are already dealing with gut sensitivity.

PHGG – partially hydrolysed guar gum – is the most well-studied low-viscosity soluble fibre available. It's produced by enzymatically breaking down the molecular structure of guar gum, which transforms it from a high-viscosity gel-former into a freely water-soluble, low-viscosity powder.

What the research says about PHGG and bloating

A randomised controlled trial comparing PHGG and psyllium in patients with irritable bowel syndrome found that PHGG produced significantly greater improvements in abdominal symptoms – including bloating – compared to psyllium, with better overall tolerability and fewer adverse effects.

Additional research has demonstrated that PHGG's slower, more selective fermentation profile produces less acute gas than high-viscosity fibres, making it appropriate for daily long-term use even in people with sensitive guts.

This isn't a marginal difference. For women who have tried fibre and stopped because of bloating, switching to a low-viscosity fibre like PHGG often produces a completely different experience.

Other reasons your fibre supplement might be worsening bloating

Not enough water

Every fibre supplement needs adequate fluid to work properly. Without enough water, fibre slows gut transit rather than supporting it – which increases fermentation time and worsens gas and bloating. Electrolyte balance matters here too – magnesium, sodium, and potassium all support gut motility and fluid balance in the digestive tract.

Starting with too much

If your current fibre intake is low, starting a supplement at the full recommended dose is often too much too soon. Your gut bacteria need time to adapt. Starting with a smaller amount and building gradually over two to three weeks significantly reduces the likelihood of acute bloating.

An underlying microbiome imbalance

If your gut bacteria are significantly imbalanced – a state called dysbiosis – any fibre supplement may cause more bloating initially, regardless of the type. This is because the bacteria doing the fermenting are not the right ones for efficient, low-gas fermentation. Supporting microbiome diversity over time with a consistent daily prebiotic is the long-term fix.

Taking it with other supplements

Some supplements – particularly magnesium oxide and certain probiotics – can compound the gas and bloating effects of a new fibre supplement. If you're taking multiple gut-related supplements simultaneously, identifying which is causing the problem becomes difficult.

What to do if fibre has made your bloating worse

First, consider switching the type of fibre. If you've been using psyllium or a high-viscosity fibre blend, trying a low-viscosity soluble fibre like PHGG is a reasonable first step. The mechanism that was causing your bloating may simply not apply to the new fibre.

Second, start low and go slow. Begin with half the recommended serving and increase gradually over two to three weeks.

Third, take it with a full glass of water and ensure you're hydrating well throughout the day.

Fourth, give it time. Gut microbiome changes happen over weeks, not days. The full benefit of a daily prebiotic fibre takes four to eight weeks of consistent use to become apparent.
