PHGG vs Psyllium: Why This Lesser-Known Fibre Is Better Tolerated for Women

PHGG is derived from guar beans. The "partially hydrolysed" part refers to an enzymatic process that breaks down the molecular structure of the original guar gum, transforming it from a high-viscosity gel-forming fibre into a low-viscosity, fully water-soluble powder.

In practical terms: it dissolves completely in water with no gel, no grit, and no noticeable texture. You mix it into a glass of water and it disappears.

But the change in texture doesn't come at the cost of efficacy. PHGG is a well-studied prebiotic soluble fibre with clinical evidence supporting its effects on gut motility, bowel regularity, gut microbiome diversity, and digestive comfort – particularly in people with irritable bowel syndrome and functional gut disorders.

Texture and tolerability

Psyllium forms a viscous gel. PHGG dissolves completely. For women who are sensitive to texture or have struggled with thick fibre powders, this is the most immediate practical difference.

Bloating and gas

Psyllium's high viscosity means it forms a dense gel in the gut that can slow transit and increase gut pressure - contributing to bloating, distension, and discomfort, particularly in women with an already sensitive gut. PHGG's low-viscosity profile means it dissolves completely without gel formation, significantly reducing the mechanical pressure and discomfort that many people experience with psyllium.

Gut microbiome support

Both fibres act as prebiotics – meaning they feed beneficial gut bacteria. PHGG has been shown in clinical research to selectively increase populations of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus – two of the most important beneficial bacterial strains for women's gut and hormonal health.

Consistency

The supplement that works best is the one you actually take every day. PHGG's neutral taste, complete dissolvability, and low bloating profile make it significantly easier to incorporate into a daily routine – which is ultimately what produces results.

Why this matters particularly for women

Psyllium also has a strong clinical evidence base – but its evidence is largely in the context of cholesterol reduction and bulk laxative use, not the kind of gentle daily prebiotic support that most women are looking for.
